As summer turns to autumn, I always feel the urge to store up warmth and light. It’s probably some sort of ancient instinct, dating back to when our ancestors were preparing for winter. So, in my paintings, I create storage of warmth and light for cold, dark days. The sunflower seems the ideal subject. Although the sight of a field of sunflowers is enchanting, industrial fields are not what inspire me. I’m always looking for the primal and the natural – life in all its fullness. Then, whilst out walking the dogs round the neighbourhood, I spotted some sunflowers right next door. And it was precisely these that ‘posed’ for me in this painting.
